The influence of fashion on today's youth

Fashion can be defined as style of clothes, hairdo, make-up and assesories that is popular at a period of time. Today's youth are fashion- conscious but their sense of style is often criticized by the public. This is mainly due to two contributing factors, their advanturous style of dressing and the conservstive nature of the society. Nevertheless, fashion is important to youth and thier fashion is must influenced by the western styles.

There is no doubt that the youth of today are brand- conscious. Brand like Levi's, CK, and Guess are some of the more popular ones and there are definitely the in- thing now.Teenagers also wear a lot more assesories today. Body- piercing is common among teenagers for both guys and girls alike. They behave in such a way so that they are labelled 'cool' by friend.

The sub-culture of today's youth.

Today's youth are very different from those of the past. To begin with, in the past there was no such thing as the so-called lepak culture which has become a common occurrence today in Malaysia. We can see that teenagers melepak or hang around in groups in shopping malls, car parks and bus stops. Although lepak is not a major problem, i think we have to do something about this before it's too late. These young people should have hobbies or do something useful rather than waste their time this way.

Today youth's, in my personal view, are more brand-conscious. Well, you might say that there were not many fashion brands back in the sixties or fifties. Young people are very influenced by fashion. They follow the latest fashion trends. They do like this because they like the fashion or they are still establish their own identity. To conclude, the sub-culture of today's youth is definetely different from that our parent's generation.

Industrialisation

Living as we do in this space age and computer era, the answer to whether industralisation is necessary for a country can nothing but a positive,"Yes!" but the 'yes' is not an absolute 'yes' but a qualified 'yes'.

What is industralisation? It is, in the words of the economist, heavy investment in land, labour and capital. The last, of course, will include heavy and light machinery and all of these will lead to mass production. The idea is that when the conditions mentioned above are satisfied the cost of a unit produced will become cheaper. There may be a large market and as the trade increases there may be more money in circulation. Wage earners can get better wages and so the average standard of life will go high or when the standard of life improves there may be more industries coming up depending upon newer wants and demands. Thus we see the industrialised countries of the West which have lead in industrialisation have high standards of life as compared with developing countries.

Too much industrialization brings boredom to man who loses his soul for the sake of the machine as seen in one of Charlie Chaplin's film. Urbanisation becomes a necessary evil with all its adjuncts of crowds, dust, filth and immorality.

While one should not be too spestic about industralization, one need not be over optimistic about it. One thing is sure, industrialization has not solved human misery.
